Twitter: The Introvert’s Cocktail Party!

I confess: I’m hopelessly hooked on Twitter. In the past I’ve been paranoid about social media, but I’ve totally drunk the Twitter Kool-Aid. I know, I know: I’m late to the party. But at least I made it. And I want you to join me!

At first I just cracked open the door and peeked around the corners of the Twitter party, hiding in the shadows. I talked to a few people I already knew, huddling in the corner, sipping my beverage, watching, just like I’ve done at “real” cocktail parties packed full of strangers. I listened. A lot. I noticed who was hanging out together, eavesdropping and giggling at their comments, but not brave enough to insert myself…yet.

I started following some of my favorite authors, then added literary agents and editors. Publishing lines. Oh yeah, let’s not forget actors, but I’m pretty sure the real Johnny Depp is not actually tweeting about how hot he is. (Fan girls like me handle that). I followed favorite bands and comedians. I started feeling more comfortable, once in a while replying to tweets from people I didn’t know. And you know what? They replied back, most of the time. And if they didn’t I reminded myself it was just like a real party where sometimes people can’t hear you over all the shouting and dancing. And that’s okay.

When I first joined the Twitter party, it was to check off the Twitter box on my social media platform list of to-do’s. Now it’s one my favorite places to hang out. Bonus: I don’t have to get glammed up or look for excuses to leave like at real life parties. I can pop in and out when I have a few minutes, talk to just a few people, or ride the flood of conversation looking for gems. If I feel an introvert panic attack coming on, I just close my app and come back later when I’m in the mood.

If you feel like joining the party, look for me and say hi. I promise to welcome you with open arms…or maybe Twitter wings?

Just for fun, I used a free app (Vizify) to make a video of my Twitter account to convince you to join me :). All I did was click a button and voila: instant video fun!

Hope to see you at the party!

  1. I’m late to get on the Twitter bandwagon, too. I was on it a while back and it just didn’t click. I decided to give it a second try and now I’m really starting to enjoy it. I love all the hashtag stuff, like the #mswl and #10queriesin10tweets. 🙂

I’m glad you’re enjoying it, too! It’s fun once you figure it out and start connecting with folks.
